There’s a buzz about town involving Key West’s marvelous music scene. Everyone is talking about the SUNDAY RAMBLE series being held at the beautifully refurbished Key West Theater at 512 Eaton Street.
The inaugural Ramble took place back in May 2015. It featured brilliant local singer/songwriters Nick Norman and Jeff Clark playing their roles as hosts for a night of incredible music. Joining Nick and Jeff, as members of the ‘House’ band were Ericson Holt on keyboards, Caffeine Carl Wagoner on lead guitar, Joey Marchiano and Randy Morrow on drums, Claire Finley on bass, Daryl Brooke on steel pedal guitar, James Whitehead on rhythm guitar, and Robyn Whitehead doing backup vocals. Anyone familiar with our local music scene knows that it would be nearly impossible to find that much talent on one stage in one night anywhere else on planet Earth. But wait, it gets better.
Aside from Norman and Clark, there were three other headliner caliber guest musicians. Tony Baltimore, Tony Roberts, and Joal Rush each took turns fronting the unbelievably talented house band. Each artist performed a set of their original music. There was also a set put aside to feature Norman, Clark, Wagoner, and Holt to each perform his originals as well. Even Claire Finley got in on the act and fronted the band for song.
To top the evening off, the entire cast joined together for an encore performance, covering The Band’s CRIPPLE CREEK. Over three hours after the first note dropped, an amazed sellout crowd rose to their feet for a rousing and more than well-deserved standing ovation. It was a Five out of Four Star performance. The community buzzed about the magic filled event and excitedly anticipated the next Sunday Ramble performance.
Not to disappoint, Tap Johnson closed down the theater for the summer to give her a makeover. The doors reopened on October 11, 2015 for SUNDAY RAMBLE – THE ENCORE performance. The theater’s new makeover was nothing short of spectacular as the same could be said for the show.
The same House Band joined the same hosts, Norman and Clark for another spectacular evening. Joal Rush was the only one from the previous show not able to attend. But on this evening, there were two special guests. Iconic Key West Rockstar/Comedian Zack Seemiller led off the show with a set of original songs, fronting the house band in true Zack Seemiller style. Baltimore, Roberts, Holt, Wagoner, Clark, and Norman again each took on a set of their own music. Finley, again dazzled the crowd with a song as well. Then, the final set belonged to the brilliant Bill Blue. The legendary Bluesman and guitar god joined the house band for a set that nearly blew the roof off of the stunning newly remodeled theater. Then, once again, the entire cast joined together for an encore performance of The Allman Brothers Band’s SOULSHINE. It was a spiritual experience!
It was another night to remember, full of incredible music, unmatched talent, and enthusiastic ovations. The Sunday Ramble Series was officially under way with two successful sold out shows.
Here’s the kicker. Norman, Clark, and The Key West Theater have just announced the next event of the series, THE SUNDAY RAMBLE – KEYS BLUES LEGENDS to be held on November 29, 2015. Bill Blue and Caffeine Carl Wagoner will be joined by, yet to be announced, additional guests for what is sure to be another sold out event. Tickets are now available.
