The Key West music scene continues to get better and better. One reason is the addition of more talent this past year. Henry Lysy Jr. is an excellent example of that added talent. Lysy and his wonderful wife Janine made a decision in early 2016 to move from Baltimore, Maryland to Key West. On March 1, 2016 they sold everything they owned, packed all of Henry’s gear and their beloved dog Leia into their Honda Civic, and made the move to our island. Born in Washington D.C. and raised in nearby Westminster, MD, Lysy began playing bass at age fourteen. The only musician in his family, Henry also plays guitar and drums. Not only is he a talented musician, but Lysy also enjoys songwriting. He writes his own lyrics and music. Performing predominantly as a bassist, Lysy has played in several bands, covering several different genres. In Maryland, he played in The H-Bombs (a Classic Rock band), The Mayfields (a Pop Rock and Alternative Country band), Soulklectic (an R&B/Soul band), and Will Hill (a Roots Reggae Rock band). Having such a wide range of experience in various types of music is something that makes Lysy a uniquely talented musician. Henry and Janine met Key West musician Ross Brown while camping in Marathon Key in 2014. Brown was so impressed with the kindness of the couple and Henry’s obvious talent that he invited them to come crash at his place to show them around the remarkable Key West music scene. So, it was only natural that once the Lysys arrived in Key West in March, Henry began playing gigs with Brown. You can catch Henry playing bass and adding vocals to Brown’s popular band Cayo Ritmo. This must see four-piece band plays everything from Funk to Reggae to Rock to Blues to Latin Style music. They are nothing short of spectacular. Cayo Ritmo can be seen playing various venues in town including performing every other Monday night at Virgilio’s as the house band for the bar’s popular Martini Mondays. The Lysys have found a home in Key West and have seemed to fit right in and gained the love and support of the local community. Janine is a sweet and friendly person who always has a smile for anyone and everyone around. Perhaps Henry’s greatest trait, aside from his obvious skills as a musician, are his friendliness and humility. This likeable couple are a welcomed addition to our island. Henry’s abilities add something special to the talent rich music scene of Key West. Who and Where in Key West welcome the Lysys to Key West and encourages everyone to get out, see Henry perform, and welcome them to our One Human Family.
